So there are many of you who loyally watch these shows and, like me, make continual comments to the television whether anyone else is in the room or not. Alternately, there are many of you who do not have the time to keep up with reality TV – there are too many shows, your tivos runneth over, you have kids and can’t remember what it’s like to watch anything beyond Dora the Explorer (you know who you are) – but you also want to be “in the know.” That’s fine. Let me help you understand.

American Idol Top 8 (Again): Free Fallin'

After last week's inexplicable use of the judge's save on American Idol, the Top 8 take the stage again tonight to perform for America's votes. I start the episode still a little bitter but David Cook is a mentor this week, and the theme tonight is 80s music which is an era I hold near and dear to my heart. All things considered, I do have a bit of excitement going into the performances. Also, Keith is wearing a mullet...and that's just fantastic. Will we see any other throwback attire or hair styles tonight? Let's find out.

Contestant: Jena Irene
Song: "I Love Rock N Roll" by Joan Jett

Jena starts the song accompanied only by the piano she is playing, then a guitar slowly comes in, then the rest of the band. It's a really neat arrangement and by the end Jena is rocking out at the mic stand.  This isn't my favorite Jena performance. "I Love Rock N Roll" isn't a song that was really going to let her shine the way some of her other song choices have, but her energy is great and she's wearing some pretty awesome pants.

Judges Say: Keith has demulleted, which is clearly a non-word that my spellcheck doesn't recognize. He gives Jena a lot of "woos" and tells Jena he loves her originality. For JLo, the performance lagged a bit in the middle, but she appreciates that Jena put her stamp on it. Harry did not like the arrangement and thinks the performance looked really choreographed.
-------------------------------

Contestant: Dexter Roberts
Song: "Keep Your Hands To Yourself" by The Georgia Satellites

Dexter picked this song because of the guitar solo...so I'm nervous about the vocals before the performance even begins. He has trouble with enunciation and doesn't quite go the solo route when he walks the stage. It's a fun performance and the audience is really into it, but I definitely think last week's performance was far superior. Now that I have really heard Dexter's singing voice and the tenderness it can hold, I want that each time.

Judges Say: JLo thinks Dexter showed plenty of personality tonight and she loved the performance. Harry says the song was another anthem song, sung in a basic way....but he also believes Dexter's performance last week, packaged with his performance tonight should get him through to next week. I'm not so sure I agree with that train of thought. I don't know that all of the people with the Idol app and speed dial are even thinking about last week when tonight's 2 hour episode is over. Keith says the first part of the performance was stiff but notes that Dexter loosened up at the end. He encourages Dexter to do something unexpected on stage like kick over a mic stand.
-------------------------------

Contestant: Malaya Watson
Song: "Through Fire" by Chaka Khan

The first part of this is actually pretty shaky for me. David Cook had asked Malaya to find spots to amp up the performance rather than going all out from the first line and tte judges have said similar things to her throughout the competition. I think Malaya has a hard time knowing what she should do with her voice when she isn't hitting the big notes. That being said, man does she hit the big notes. The second half of the song is much, much better than the first.

Judges Say: Keith asks Malaya to lay back in the song a little more and JLo agrees that she needs to relax when waiting for the big moments in the song. Harry says Malaya sacrificed what she was singing about during the first half of the song because she was so worried about hitting the big notes in the second half.
-------------------------------

Contestant: Jessica Meuse
Song: "Call Me" by Blondie

I LOVE this song. It's one of my favorite 80 tunes ever. When the song starts Jessica stands in front of a huge sign of her name...wearing a shirt that kind of matches the sign. I do a puppy head tilt for a second but then she begins to sing and the distraction is gone. One of David's critiques had been for Jessica to enjoy the song, but I really only see that during her tour around the judges table. Vocally she's fantastic though.

Judges Say: Harry says Jessica has a great voice and tells her to sing the shuffle and get into a groove. Keith thinks it's just a matter of her releasing completely. JLo says "Call Me" is a sexy song and Jessica needed to tap into that part of her.
-------------------------------

Contestant: Sam Woolf
Song: "Time After Time" by Cyndi Lauper

David advises Sam to connect with the audience (weird), so Sam goes back to standing in the middle of the teenage girls in the pit in front of the stage. He looks at the camera throughout the song though and does not give any of those poor pining kids the time of day. The performance on the whole is less snoozy than previous weeks and Sam is definitely on point tonight with his vocals. I'm just still of the opinion that he should not have been saved.

Judges Say: Keith loved the solo acoustic guitar vibe that Sam had going. He then tells Sam to loosen up. Yup. JLo thinks Sam did a great job tonight and she felt that he felt the song. So his feelings were her feelings...she feels what he feels. Harry says Sam is getting better every week (yeah?) and he notes that Sam shouldn't have looked at the camera the whole time. He also tells Sam to look up Ricky Nelson online and watch what he does. Um...I can already tell you that Ricky Nelson was a heartthrob who connected with the ladies in the audience from day one. Yes, I grew up watching The Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet and I'm proud of it.
-------------------------------

Contestant: Alex Preston
Song: "Every Breath You Take" by The Police

I'm not always on board with Alex's choices when it comes to making the song his own. Tonight, however, I absolutely love what he does with this classic tune. It's a complete derailment from the original, but Alex really sells it. He emotes, he sounds fantastic, and this is my favorite Alex performance of the season.

Judges Say: Harry says the song sounded like a new tune but says Alex needs to know the difference between a performer and an entertainer. Harry doesn't think the "coffee house treatment" is going to get Alex much further in the competition. Really!?!?! That's who Alex is! Harry has been harping all season about the contestants "knowing who they are." The audience boos him and I agree. Keith says Alex grabbed his attention right away and thinks the bold choice to dismantle the song and rebuild it was a good one. JLo disagrees and thinks the soul of the song was lost in Alex's arrangement.
-------------------------------

Contestant: C.J. Harris
Song: "Free Fallin'" by Tom Petty

C.J. looks unsure of his performance from the opening notes. He slows down the song, which is okay, but where I was captivated by Alex's arrangement...I'm bored by this one. C.J. hits some pretty great notes, but he has some realllly shaky ones too. This performance wasn't for me.

Judges Say: The crowd is going crazy. Did I miss something? JLo says there has never been another contestant that she has rooted for note by note. She talks more about how C.J. touches people's hearts and Harry compliments C.J.'s connection. He also reiterates that C.J. needs to focus on his pitch. Uh huh. Keith says C.J. gave a great rendition of the song and tells C.J. that he has a "survivor tone" in his voice. I'm getting a little tired of the sugar coating.
-------------------------------

Contestant: Caleb Johnson
Song: "Faithfully" by Journey

This is another amazing 80s song. Who doesn't love Journey? As much as I want to sing along, I'm too into Caleb's voice to join in. He keeps the first half of the song subtle and quiet, which I'm hoping will shut Harry up, and he stays faithful to the song (see what I did there?) by then launching into the loud awesomeness of the second half. Keith uses the lighter app on his phone and JLo looks like she is having a religious experience. Best performance of the night. LOVE IT.

Judges Say: Harry got what he's been complaining about and he says he's proud of Caleb. Keith talks about fanny packs and I'm not sure why. JLo says Steve Perry is one of the gods and she thinks Caleb murdered the song (which sounds terrible but is actually a compliment).
-------------------------------

The contestants also took on duets again this evening, with Alex and Sam doing an odd rendition of "The Girl Is Mine" by Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney. Maybe I'm just too much of an MJ fan to get on board with this version. Jessica and Dexter were paired up for a mostly enjoyable duet of "Islands In The Stream" by Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers, and much to my (pleasant) surprise, Malaya and C.J. teamed up for a pretty great version of "I Knew You Were Waiting" by George Michael and Aretha Franklin. Caleb and Jena, however, totally tore up "It's Only Love" by Bryan Adams and Tina Turner. Nothing about their performance is forced or awkward and the duet is the best of the night.

Tomorrow night we will definitely lose a contestant now that the judges' save is no longer in play. Will Sam go home anyway? Will his fellow bottom 3 dweller, C.J., finally end his journey? Will the save come back to bite the judges with a frontrunner leaving us tomorrow? We'll find out during the results show. Til then!

American Idol Elimination: Just Give Me A Reason

During the American Idol results show tonight, the judges used their save. Was it warranted? Did someone who could win the whole thing escape elimination thanks to the wisdom of Keith, JLo and Harry? Here's how it played out...

Daughtry returned to the Idol stage tonight to sing "Waiting For Superman." I really enjoyed the performance...even after The Dawg gave the band a very painful introduction. Great song though. I haven't checked out much of the new album yet, but I definitely need to get on that.

Results! When the "look at the giant tv screen and hope your face is on there" reveal began, Dexter was the first contestant to make it to the Top 7. He was quickly joined by Jena, Caleb and Jessica, so I sat pretty happy with what was happening. Alex was the last contestant declared safe, leaving Malaya, Sam and C.J. in the bottom 3.  Sam has received the lowest number of votes and I was entirely ready for him to go home. But wait...

Sam sang a decent version of "Babylon" and the judges use their save. WHAT?!?! Ben's golden voice and high energy didn't even make the tour, but the judges' save is used for a kid who lives in the bottom 3? A contestant who the judges say lacks connection EVERY week? This is the guy the competition just can't do without? Even the teenage audience with every voting apparatus on their iPhones isn't doing enough to keep Sam out of the bottom 3 each week. I'm not happy about this.

Is the confetti necessary?
This isn't the finale.

Next week the Idol Top 8 will perform again and we'll see if the damn save makes any difference at all in the voting. I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that this move doesn't come back to haunt them. If we lose someone like Caleb or Jena next week because of this shake up, I will be one disgruntled viewer. We'll what happens next week. Til then!

American Idol Top 8: We Could Have Had It All

Tonight the American Idol Top 8 go back to the beginning, taking on their original audition song and hopefully improving on it. I'm initially not sure how to feel about this given we've already heard these songs (albeit briefly) once, but Idol throws some duets at us as well to switch things up a bit. Let's get to it!

Contestant: Jessica Meuse
Song: "Blue-Eyed Lie" by Jessica Meuse

I enjoyed this tune the first time I heard it and I enjoy it even more this time with a full band behind Jessica. I can definitely see Jessica recording an album and I would buy it in  a heartbeat. She's developed confidence, and more importantly, star quality. Fantastic way to start the night.

Judges Say:  Keith loves the ferocity that Jessica sings with. He just wants her to start moving about more - says her upper body is doing all the work. Not touching that one. JLo tells Jessica that "something happened" when Jessica sang that song tonight. She calls the performance perfect. Jessica reminds Harry of Cher or Nancy Sinatra in the 70s. He disagrees with Keith though, saying she delivered the song just fine with zero movement.
------------------------------------

Contestant: C.J. Harris
Song: "Soul Shine" by the Allman Brothers Band

Looking back on C.J.'s audition...I have to laugh at the part where JLo says "There was things that you do consistently wrong, but we can fix that." C.J. promises us that tonight's performance will be better than his audition. Sure, I'll give him that. I'll also give him points for improving on the previous two weeks as well. He still has some pitch problems but overall I would say this is a step in the right direction.

Judges Say: JLo is beaming like a proud mom. She tells C.J. that he knows the performance was better than the first time and says he touches her heart. Harry thinks C.J.'s pitch was definitely better and he applauds C.J. for really working on his voice. Keith agrees that tonight's performance was better than the audition. He also says the song was good to hear because that's the song that got C.J. here. Yes, Keith. That's tonight's theme.
------------------------------------

Contestant: Sam Woolf
Song: "The Lego House" by Ed Sheeran

See...again, this is just so snoozy for me. Sam takes a slowish song and makes it even slowwwwer. There are also a lot of clap on/clap off lamps in that lego house. Look, I think Sam is adorable, and I know teenage girls everywhere are watching his performance and clapping and letting out shrieks of joy. I get it. I just don't think he's destined to make it that much further in the competition.

Judges Say: Harry thinks Sam needs to be more connected to the audience and to take advantage of his heartthrob status. Keith says Sam is getting better every week and notes that Sam was much looser tonight. JLo can barely talk because of all the female screams. She says Sam is magic.
------------------------------------

Contestant: Malaya Watson
Song: "Ain't No Way" by Aretha Franklin

I probably harp on Malaya's age way too much, but she's just so young and has a voice so big. Tonight's performance is no exception. She blew her audition out of the water and I'm so happy for her. After that awful "Runaway" performance in week 1, I thought for sure Malaya was in over her head. Granted, she has some maturing to do and has some work to do as well...Malaya still has some control issues, but THIS is a perfect case of "There was things that you do consistently wrong, but we can fix that." I would put my money on her over C.J. any day.

Judges Say: Keith gives her a standing ovation. He loves watching Malaya grow each week and tells her she was "with it" tonight. JLo thinks Malaya is blossoming into a star before our eyes. She says Malaya can run away with this competition. Harry tells Malaya she did everything right tonight but wants her to continue to work on her runs. He asks her to refer to the great musicians she's working with like Rickey Minor and Randy Jackson. I'm sorry. Randy Jackson? He's going to be the one to make those runs perfection? The camera cuts to The Dawg doing his normal, thoughtful (?) head nod.
------------------------------------

Contestant: Dexter Roberts
Song: "One Mississippi" by Brett Eldredge

I remember Dexter's audition and remember wishing we would see him again post-Hollywood. In this performance I see a slight change in Dexter. He's smooth and dare I say it?...kind of sexy. And apparently former Idol contestant Allison Iraheta is a back up singer on the show. I had no idea. I heart her. She accompanies Dexter beautifully and I would like them to record a real duet together. Now.

Judges Say: JLo has tears in her eyes throughout most of the performance. When it ends she tells Dexter that she and the audience got to hear little nuances in his voice that we've never heard before. She then gives a shout out to Allison and that makes me smile. Harry thinks Dexter sat on the stool and sang the hell out of the song. He says he was touched by the performance. Keith mentions that Dexter has grown leaps and bounds...he then says the word "sound" enough times to make this critique into a drinking game.
------------------------------------

Contestant: Jena Irene
Song: "Rolling in the Deep" by Adele

This is how you slow down a song. Jena KILLS this performance. She doesn't try to be Adele for a second and that is her smartest move. So many of these reality TV singers take on Adele songs and try to emulate her, and that's just not possible. Adele is a musical goddess....but back to Jena. This is my favorite performance so far tonight. Hands down.

Judges Say:  Harry has become accustomed to Jena's voice and thinks she did a great job. Keith loved the performance because she made the song her own. JLo's advice to Jena is to blow everybody away and win the whole thing. Oh my gosh! I bet Jena never thought of that.
------------------------------------

Contestant: Caleb Johnson
Song: "Chain of Fools" by Aretha Franklin

Aretha is popular tonight. Caleb's audition was fantastic, but tonight he has a band and a full arena to sing to. He's also got quite a sneer on him tonight as he sings this song...unfortunately now that I know Allison is on the show, I keep looking for her each time the camera shows the backup singers in any capacity. Caleb's performance is still awesome though. If there's anyone who wants to blow everybody away and win the whole thing, it's Caleb.

Judges Say:  Keith calls Caleb a "soul conqueror" and says he delivers every week. JLo thinks Caleb is in a constant state of "I've always wanted to do this" and she loves it. Harry kills everyone's buzz by asking Caleb to do a performance that isn't so loud.
------------------------------------

Contestant: Alex Preston
Song: "Fairytales" by Alex Preston

I seriously love that the show began and ended tonight with original songs from the contestants. Alex has been on my "I don't care if he goes home list" for a while now, but this is by far my favorite Alex performance. He is 100% connected (I guess he would have to be), he has the audience in the palm of his hand, oh...and vocally, it's crazy good. Let the man sing his own songs every week!

Judges Say: JLo says Alex has stayed true to himself from the very beginning and she loves him. Harry liked the arrangement and Keith notes that the contestants were singing along with Alex from the couches. Awesome.
------------------------------------

In terms of the duets, Jessica and Caleb had the best one...which is not so surprising. Their version of "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around" was fantastic and their voices complimented each other perfectly.  Jena and Alex's take on "Just Give Me A Reason," on the other hand, was rough. There was zero chemistry between them and Alex was reallllly awkward. I'm also not a fan of the arrangement at all. It's a beautiful song. Let's keep it that way. Malaya and Sam also jumped on the awkward train tonight. Their version of "Lucky" was sweet at times but poor Sam doesn't know what to do without his guitar. Finally, Dexter and C.J. busted out their guitars for "Alright." I would say that duet was entertaining, and all in all, these performances were an okay way to fill some time.

Finale Foreshadowing?

Tomorrow the Top 7 will be revealed and one more hopeful will leave the show. Did C.J. do enough to redeem himself? Will Sam's fan base send him through to next week? Will America love Dexter and all of his nuances? We'll find out during the results show. Til then!
