So there are many of you who loyally watch these shows and, like me, make continual comments to the television whether anyone else is in the room or not. Alternately, there are many of you who do not have the time to keep up with reality TV – there are too many shows, your tivos runneth over, you have kids and can’t remember what it’s like to watch anything beyond Dora the Explorer (you know who you are) – but you also want to be “in the know.” That’s fine. Let me help you understand.

The Voice: Live Playoffs Part 2

Round 2 of the Live Playoffs features the five remaining contestants from Team Xtina and Team Cee-Lo. Carson puts the pressure on immediately, saying that the performances from Team Adam and Team Blake set the bar very high. I’m not so sure about that, but let’s see how the other teams do tonight.

Contestant: Adriana Louise
Team: Xtina
Song: “Firework” by Katy Perry

The first verse is entirely too low for Adriana – I can barely hear her, and she seems to be out of breath and/or very nervous. Vocally, she does fine on the chorus, but she is still very stiff in her performance. Maybe she just has a bit of stage fright this evening.

Coaches Say: Cee-Lo says Adriana did a great job and his team considers her worthy competition. Adam tells her she did an incredible job. Blake doesn’t like how good she is. Annnnd already I feel like I’m missing something. Xtina says Adriana is a sweet and genuine person, and she is a “total star.”
-------------------------------------------------

Contestant: Cody Belew
Team: Cee-Lo
Song: “One More Try” by George Michael

Helloooooo, Cody Belew. This is probably one of my least favorite George Michael songs, but he is singing it so well...I am suddenly a huge fan. Cody is very smooth and very confident, and I might be swooning as I watch the performance. Cee-Lo picked the perfect song for him to sing. Nicely done.

Coaches Say: Adam says the song choice was pure genius and Cody did a brilliant job performing it. Blake tells Cody he is one of Miranda’s favorites on the show, which is not a bad place to be at all. He also says this was Cody's best performance yet. Xtina loooooooved the performance as well and says Cody always makes her smile. Cee-Lo is so proud of Cody, saying he worked the stage like a seasoned professional. Well, I'm sure he can work a few other things too.
---------------------------------------------

Contestant: De’borah
Team: Xtina
Song: “Who Knew” by Pink

GOOD song. She is definitely different and makes the song her own, which I greatly appreciate. She has a ton of energy, having a great time on stage and really feeling her performance. She’s not as awesome as Cody, but she is much better than Adrianna.

Coaches Say: Cee-Lo tells her she moves with swagger and what she does is very compelling. Adam says there is nothing “regular” about De’borah and the voice is only as good as the soul pushing the voice. Her voice “always sneaks up” on Blake and he applauds her. Xtina says she is so real and loves how she commands the stage.
----------------------------------------------

Contestant: Diego Val
Team: Cee-Lo
Song: “Bailamos” by Enrique Iglesias

Diego is not super comfortable with this song in rehearsals, and that definitely translates to his stage performance as well. He has a good voice, but this was not the song for it. On the other hand, he is singing for America’s votes, and I wish he was trying to sell it just a bit more because he has potential. This has to be my least favorite performance so far.

Coaches Say: Adam thinks Diego wasn’t fully engaged in the song. Blake says there is a real coolness about Diego even though he is not wearing socks. Heh. Xtina agrees that he was not 100% into the song. Cee-Lo tried to give Diego a “safe place” to perform and didn’t think it was terrible at all…I also wonder if Cee-Lo has already planned a performance show for next week without Diego?
------------------------------------------------

Contestant: MacKenzie Bourg
Team: Cee-Lo
Song: “What Makes You Beautiful” by One Direction

MacKenzie is so cute with his new found role as a teen heartthrob. This song is right on point for him and he does a great job with it. Get used to the screaming girls, kid.

Coaches Say: Adam feels like Mackenzie is a throwback to Buddy Holly. I can absolutely see that. Blake thinks he is one of those guys who can make something his own if he chooses the music correctly. Xtina says MacKenzie is a little charmer, but she would like to see him step outside his comfort zone a little. Cee-Lo wants a little more energy from him, but he is still a big fan.
----------------------------------------------

Contestant: Devyn Delorea
Team: Xtina
Song: “Bleeding Love” by Leona Lewis

You know, I barely remember Devyn from the rounds leading up to the playoffs, but she really has some stage presence tonight. This can’t be an easy song to sing, but she and her sassy red dress are making it happen for the most part. Not the best of the night or anything, but she stands out for sure. Kudos to whoever chose the dress.

Coaches Say: Cee-Lo knows that Devyn is a wonderful performer but this may have not been her best performance. Blake likes softer Devyn but also enjoys powerhouse Devyn. Xtina says Devyn always goes for the big note and did an amazing job. I don’t quite believe her though, and neither does Devyn….she looks quite distraught when her number appears on screen.
-------------------------------------------------

Contestant: Nicholas David
Team: Cee-Lo
Song: “You’re the First, the Last, My Everything” by Barry White

Nicholas has undergone a bit of a makeover but he seems to retain his performance style which is a plus – I hate it when a contestant becomes completely unrecognizable during these competitions. He has a great voice, but I am a bit bored with the song. Maybe I’m just not a Barry White girl.

Coaches Say: Adam says Barry White does “baby-making music” and after listening to Nicholas, he wants to make a baby. I imagine many women in the audience started throwing elbows and rushing to the stage at that point. Blake tells Nicholas he is not supposed to look like that and sound like that and says,“thank God for The Voice.” Cee-Lo says Nicholas can do no wrong in his book.
---------------------------------------------------

Contestant: Sylvia Yacoub
Team: Xtina
Song: “The One that Got Away” by Katy Perry (Xtina must be a fan)

Sylvia starts behind a piano, so bonus points for her because she is multi-talented. This is the softer, vulnerable vibe Xtina had probably been going for with Devyn as well, but Sylvia makes it work much, much better. Best of the night so far. Well done!

Coaches Say: Cee-Lo says this was his favorite performance of the night. Adam thinks Sylvia definitely deserves to move forward. Xtina “gets” Sylvia and says she is a true artist.
---------------------------------------------------

Contestant: Dez Duran
Team: Xtina
Song: “Wanted” by Hunter Hays

Dez is just gorgeous – a beautiful specimen to behold for sure. Does he have the best voice? No. Does that matter to me? Kind of. Is it going to matter to the teenage girls voting? Absolutely not.  My assumption is even though he has been outperformed tonight, he will stick around for a while.

Coaches Say: Adam says the song choice wasn’t his personal taste, but he is a good singer. Blake is mad that Dez did not pick him as a coach but sang a country song. Xtina gives Dez a standing ovation (seriously?) and tells him he nailed it. Nailed what exactly?
------------------------------------------------

Contestant: Trevin Hunte
Team: Cee-Lo
Song: “How am I Supposed to Live Without You?” by Michael Bolton

Trevin does the “gentle giant” thing quite well, and he has such an amazing voice. This is a great song choice for him, and I hope Cee-Lo is really invested here. The crowd looooooves Trevin, and if you ask me (which you didn't), I would say he has the potential to go all the way on this show.

Coaches Say: Blake says Trevin moves him and he has everything it takes to win The Voice. Xtina tells Trevin what he does is so special and hopes Cee-Lo pushes him in the competition. Cee-Lo is speechless.
---------------------------------------------------

At this point, the contestants from all four teams have performed for America's votes. We'll see who America chooses and who the coaches save during the (hopefully painless) results show. Til then!
