So there are many of you who loyally watch these shows and, like me, make continual comments to the television whether anyone else is in the room or not. Alternately, there are many of you who do not have the time to keep up with reality TV – there are too many shows, your tivos runneth over, you have kids and can’t remember what it’s like to watch anything beyond Dora the Explorer (you know who you are) – but you also want to be “in the know.” That’s fine. Let me help you understand.

Idol: Down To Five

Tonight we say goodbye to another Idol contestant, and it’s probably more competitive now than ever. As we look at the montage from last night the following words come up on screen: “one of them will become a legend…and one of them will go home.” Wow. I’ll have to check with the legendary Taylor Hicks on how accurate that statement is.  If he's not home, I'll call Lee DeWyze.

The judges take their seats, and now that Randy is proudly displaying his “Yo Yo Yo” necklace, we can begin.

We kick off the night with a performance from The Queen Extravaganza, a band hand-picked by original Queen members Roger Taylor and Brian May. I’m way happier watching this than having to sit through another Top Six group medley. They do an awesome job singing “Somebody to Love.” One of the guitarists even does a back flip (it’s the little things that matter most). And then Roger and Brian join them on stage! They are rocking out, and I LOVE it.
Results! Jessica and Elise are up first. Jessica’s dad is in the audience tonight, so it would be a heck of a night for Jessica to be sent home. Elise looks prepared to head over to the bottom 3 stools (I wonder if she calls dibs on what stool she wants right before the show begins), and sure enough that’s where she’s going. Jessica is safe.
Back from commercial and Ryan is talking with one of the contestants on Survivor. Oh wait – that’s actually last season’s Casey James. He’s just auditioning for Castaway 2: Wilson’s Return. This was somehow supposed to be a great segue for Stefano’s performance. He sings his new single “I’m on a Roll,” and it appears as though Stefano is his own boy band. The song is slightly repetitive, but at least I know that he is on a roll and that he’s going to live like it’s the best night of his life. Confetti falls on Stefano at the end of the song…but…um…he didn’t win this competition so this is a little awkward for me.
Results! Hollie and Joshua take center stage, and I wait for the judges to give Joshua a standing ovation. Look! There he is! And he’s in the vicinity of a microphone! No? No standing? No matter – we all knew he was safe anyway, and Hollie heads over to sit with Elise.
Back from commercial and Katy Perry sings “Part of Me”…in a war zone? How does Jessica’s dad feel about this? Sorry Stefano – I’m about 15 seconds from forgetting your performance all together. Katy never disappoints, and I am greatly entertained by this spectacle.
Results! Phillip and Skylar await their fates, and I’m nervous for both of them. So is Randy. Remember, he hopes no one goes home tonight. Phillip is safe, and Skylar is in the bottom three.  Not for long though – she is ultimately safe, and we are down to Elise and Hollie.
After the commercial break Elise squeezes Hollie in support (in terror?) of what may come next. Oh Elise, goodbye is on the tip of my tongue. I just don’t think she will make it through another week in the bottom, and she does not. There are many “boos” from the audience, and as her journey plays on the screen, the judges stand and clap. Better late than never?
We are one step closer to the finale, with Phillip, Skylar, Hollie, Jessica and Joshua still around to duke it out. We’ll see which one of them is on the brink of becoming a “legend” next week. Until then!

Idol: The Top Six Perform

Tonight our remaining six contestants will sing two songs each. They will choose their own songs later on in the show, but they will first take on the songs from Queen. I’m already on edge because Jessica and Joshua tend to shout at me, so tonight’s performances could do me in. Before we get to the individual performances, the Top Six sing a medley with the remaining Queen band members (it seems so sad to say that). It’s always good to see Brian May wailing on the guitar, and I’m kind of hoping he stays on stage for the rest of the night.

Contestant: Jessica Sanchez
Song: "Bohemian Rhapsody"

Either my TV is on the fritz or Jessica has requested black and white television for this performance. Behind her, three of her heads sing on the giant screen. Suddenly the color on the TV is fixed, and she is rocking out…sort of…and without Brian May. While I absolutely appreciate her vocal ability (adrenaline?), the song is chopped up, and it just isn’t as awesome when you’re only hearing snippets.

Judges’ Remarks: Steven says Freddie Mercury would be proud of that. You think? I'm not sure it was that mind-blowing of a performance. J.Lo says she needed Jessica to rock out more. Finally! Criticism! Randy loves it because there were no runs, and she’s mad young. Here we go, America.

------------------------------------

Contestant: Skylar Laine
Song: “The Show Must Go On”
The violins are out in full force for this performance, so I wonder for a second if this will turn into a country song. It doesn’t, as indicated not only by the flames on stage, but by the backup singer in sunglasses as well. Non-country rock is not Skylar’s strong suit, but she does a really good job with this song, and I’m happy for her.

Judges’ Remarks: Steven says it was over the top, and he means it as a compliment. J.Lo got goosies. I really wish we could call them something else. Randy believes this was one of her best performances, and then yells  “Ryan, this girl right here, she’s gotta have it dude.” And suddenly we are back at Cold Stone Creamery.
---------------------------------

Contestant: Joshua Ledet
Song: “Crazy Little Thing Called Love”
As my right eye twitches, I begin to sing my own lyrics...

This song
It’s loud
It’s shrill
It’s deafening..

Joshua screeches through most of it, and I don’t enjoy the performance at all. Not that it matters….it’s going to get a standing ovation and end up being the best performance of the night, because the judges and producers have already declared him the Season 11 winner.

Judges’ Remarks: Standing ovation. I refuse to comment further.
---------------------------------
Contestant: Elise Testone
Song: “I Want It All”

Rock Elise is back! Woohoo! She’s also working a tambourine, as much as one can work a tambourine anyway. I like this performance. She's looks confident and excited about this performance, and I’m a fan or her persistence despite the fact that she is often a whipping post on this show. Randy, I think this is also a girl who's gotta have it.
Judges’ Remarks: Steven really enjoys Elise. J.Lo says Elise is in her element and that everything came together. Randy says “Wow, what a night so far. Who would have thunk it?” Indeed. He then says the performance was brilliant.
---------------------------------
Contestant: Phillip Phillips
Song: “Fat Bottomed Girls”

This is such a good song. I do wish P squared would look like he’s having as much fun as I’m sure he is actually having, but otherwise, this is a great rendition. I'll give him credit for working on his smoldering "hello, ladies" camera look. I usually say "helloooo, Phillip Phillips" right back. I enjoy this, but I am really looking forward to the song he chooses for himself later.

Judges’ Remarks: Steven looks at J.Lo and she can’t imagine why Steven would look at her after hearing “Fat Bottomed Girls.” J.Lo thinks Phillip gives us different flavors each week, and that is the mark of a great singer. Randy was not jumping up and down – I challenge him to actually do this someday.
------------------------------
Contestant: Hollie Cavanagh
Song: “Save Me”
This isn’t one of the more famous Queen songs, so it’s an interesting choice for her. I think Hollie sounds great, and she is very connected to the song. Her emotional bond here seems to take the place of her nerves. She’s come such a long way, and I hope she is given a fair critique tonight. Since they were easy on Elise though, I feel that Hollie may take the round 1 beating.
Judges’ Remarks: Steven thinks she did a really good job with it. J.Lo felt her get emotional during the song, and because of that she went off just a little. J.Lo wants to Hollie enjoy the song more. Um. Did J.Lo listen to the lyrics and message of this song? It’s not exactly “On The Floor.” No more talking from you. Randy thinks it was a good performance, but the melodies were simple. Thank you, king of the back-handed compliment.

------------------------------
Contestant: Jessica Sanchez
Song: “Dance With My Father,” by Luther Vandross

Jessica’s father has gone through a series of deployments, and she dedicates this song to him. I forgive Jessica for using J.Lo’s wind machine for this song because she tones down her yelling and really sings beautifully. I’m remembering now why I loved her in the beginning of the competition.

Judges’ Remarks: J.Lo says this was the most beautiful she has ever heard this song. You know what she means. Steven thanks Jessica for singing it so beautifully. Randy thinks she is truly amazing.
----------------------------
Contestant: Skylar Laine
Song: “Tattoos On This Town,” by Jason Aldean

Skylar returns to her country roots, playing the guitar and exerting her twang. She’s not crazy and shaky like she is during other country performances, but she’s so at home with this song, and I really think she will be successful in the country music industry.
Judges’ Remarks: Randy is a ginormous fan of Skylar’s.  Perhaps this is why he can’t jump and down. J.Lo thinks that Skylar slayed it. Steven misses her flare a bit, but he’s still one of her biggest fans.
----------------------------
Contestant: Joshua Ledet
Song: “Ready For Love,” by India Aire

I really need Joshua to go easy on my eardrums. For the love – don’t scream at me. This is actually very, very good. Like Jessica, Joshua takes it easy and the result is beautiful. For me, for him, this is one of my favorite Joshua performances, and this time he has really earned the praise he is about to receive.

Judges’ Remarks: Standing ovation. Randy is speechless….except for the part where he talks for 30 seconds. J.Lo says Joshua snaps us right into reality. Steven not only gets snapped into reality when Joshua sings, he also goes off into another place when Joshua sings. I may not be Einstein, but I know those two statements are complete contradictions.
--------------------------------
Contestant: Elise Testone
Song: “Bold as Love,” by Jimi Hendrix

Rock Elise, round two, and I'm loving it. I know she is not supposed to be one of the front runners, and she’s not someone I’m even rooting for to win, but she has really grown on me. We'll see if stealing from Steven's wardrobe tonight gives her any bonus points.
Judges’ Remarks: Steven worries that she picked a song people aren’t familiar with. By people, he means the 14 year old girls squealing for Phillip in the first few rows. He cautions her not to “pick cherries with your back to the tree.” That would be challenging to do regardless. J.Lo calls Elise one of the best singers in the competition. She does realize Elise is up there and not Jessica or Joshua, right? Randy doesn’t think it was the right song (because that’s what Steven said), and he also thinks she was "boxing with the song." I immediately picture a Rocky montage where Elise trains to sing Jimi Hendrix.
---------------------------------
Contestant: Phillip Phillips
Song: “The Stone,” by Dave Matthews Band

YES! Finally, a Dave Matthews song. I can't wait to see what he does with it. P squared is all in black for this performance, branching out from his gray t-shirts. He sounds exactly how I would expect him to sound on this song, which may or may not be a good thing. Typically he is praised for his artistry, but singing a Dave song and sounding like Dave is a bit of a let down. He still sounds good, and he is still my favorite, but I hope this performance doesn't hurt him in the long run.
Judges’ Remarks: Steven loves this because it was off the wall. J.Lo thinks each of the finalists has a shot to win. Especially Phillip. What? J.Lo thinks he should have picked a different song, however, because it was a little too artsy. She'd be making sense if she were making sense. Randy disagrees and loves that Phillip is an artist, and that he is also Phillip Phillips.  As long as P squared retains his birth certificate then, he should be good to go.
--------------------------------
Contestant: Hollie Cavanagh
Song: “The Climb,” by Miley Cyrus

Well the good news is, Hollie has to sound better live than Miley does. Can't really go wrong there. I’m glad Hollie gets to close the show because vocally, this is a great performance. Say what you want about whether she lets loose, or enjoys herself while belting depressing lyrics – she can SING. This is her moment, and this is the best of the night for me.

Judges’ Remarks: Standing OVATION! YAY! Randy says “Yo! Hollie is back! Yo!” J.Lo thinks it was perfect. Or peahrfect, if you are Hollie. Steven tries to speak in an English/Australian accent poorly and then expresses his love for Hollie.
--------------------------------

As we close the show Ryan talks to the judges about who is in danger. Randy makes sure to use all of his Idol experience when he says "I hope none of you go home." We'll find out if Randy gets his wish tomorrow night after Stefano (think hard, and you will remember him) and Katy Perry perform during the results show!

The Voice: Team Adam and Team Cee-Lo Face Another Elimination

Tonight Team Adam and Team Cee-Lo say goodbye to another contestant as we make our way to the semifinals. We relive the excitement from last night before really kicking off the show with a performance from Florence + The Machine. The new single is called “No Light, No Light,” and it’s awesome. This is also one of those situations where slightly distracting backup dancers are welcome. Great start to the show.

Results! Team Adam is up first and after a nail-biting delay… we find out that Tony is safe! This leaves Mathai and Katrina to sing for their lives, and I’m already antsy for Katrina. I really want her to make it to the semifinals. Team Cee-Lo takes center stage now, and Jamar is safe! Juliet and Cheesa will sing for the save as well, and I’m pulling for Juliet.
-----------------------
Mathai performs first, and she takes on Carrie Underwood’s “Cowboy Casanova.” I appreciate that she is trying to do something different by choosing this song, but I do not enjoy this. There is a lot of pressure here, and I think it has gotten to her. She is strained throughout the song. Blake thinks Mathai is cute and loves that she is embracing her hillbilly side. Xtina notices the nerves during the performance but she is also glad Mathai got to show that side of her. Cee-Lo likes her aggression and charisma. What about the performance?
Katrina sings “Perfect,” by Pink. This is tricky given how awesome last year’s battle round duet between Vicki and Nicki was. Katrina is nervous as well, but her vocals hold up far better than Mathai’s. Pretty, pretty please, Adam. SAVE HER. Blake calls Katrina the best singer on Adam’s team, and Xtina agrees and takes it a step further saying she is the most excited to hear original material from Katrina.

Back from commercial and it is decision time for Adam. But first we have to find out who the other judges would save. Blake and Xtina would choose Katrina, and and Cee-Lo would choose Mathai. That was a perfect time filler. Adam, seriously, do the right thing. He rambles, and rambles, and the pit in my stomach grows bigger. Is there a drum roll? Is it over yet? Can I open my eyes? Adam saves Katrina! I’m already spent, and we’re only half way there.
-------------------------------

Cheesa sings “Already Gone,” by Kelly Clarkson (who turns 30 today – Happy Birthday!). Oh. Back to Cheesa. This is entirely too low for me…kind of my problem with her song from last night as well. I’m not sure she ever really found the pitch, and I hate calling singers pitchy. Cheesa is talented for sure, but I’m rooting for Juliet here. Blake thinks she may have been flat for part of it, but other parts were powerful. Xtina agrees (Wow. She’s really playing nice with the other coaches tonight).
Juliet sings “Torn,” by Natalie Imbruglia. This is how you sing for your life. She is pushing herself but not in a desperate way – more of an “I’m a performer, damn it” sort of way. Well done.  Blake regrets not hitting his button for Juliet during the blind auditions. Xtina isn’t as much of a fan of Juliet’s softer voice. She would rather have more performances like “Roxanne” from a few weeks back.

It’s up to Cee-Lo now. I think this one is a no brainer, but stranger things have happened. Blake and Xtina would save Juliet…and we’re out of time. Let’s go Cee-Lo! He asks both of them to smile and then talks about how much he loves them both and how wonderful they are…did I mention we are out of time? Cee-Lo saves Juliet, and tonight went exactly as I had hoped.
------------------------------

Next week the remaining 8 contestants will compete in the semifinals, and the coaches will no longer have the instant elimination option or the save. Until then!

The Voice Quarterfinals: Team Adam and Team Cee-Lo

Tonight the remaining two teams compete for a spot in the semifinals. Two of the four contestants from each team will make it through to next week. Adam and Cee-Lo will each have to eliminate one contestant at the end of tonight’s performances, and the others will hope to win America’s votes. Before we can start though, we must pause inappropriately for a second due to Cee-Lo’s gas. Perhaps he is nervous for his contestants? A few more fart jokes and then we are on our way…

Team Cee-Lo: Jamar Rogers
Song: “It’s My Life,” by Bon Jovi

Jamar has a whole host of reasons to be connected to this song, and when we watch the rehearsal package, I worry that he’s just going to lose it on stage tonight. Quite the opposite actually, which is a relief. As much as I feel for the challenges he has been faced with in his life, I know I would have enjoyed this performance even without the back story, and that makes me want to root for him even more.

Coaches Say: Adam reveals that Jamar was the very first blind audition, and though Adam feels that he may have missed out because Cee-Lo got to Jamar first, Jamar is exactly where he needs to be. Blake thinks the song was paired with the right person. Xtina says he sang like it was his life on the line. A little insensitive given his medical issues? If so, Jamar handles it well. Cee-Lo calls him J Bird and tells him to “listen to the love.” The audience goes nuts. Cee-Lo also says he would proudly stand beside Jamar during his fight and die with him. Xtina doesn’t chime back in…
-------------------------------------

Team Adam: Katrina Parker
Song: “Jar of Hearts,” by Christina Perry

I’m a huge fan of this song, and I am so excited to hear her rendition. Katrina sings the song in the middle of a heart laced with fog, but I can ignore that because she is just fantastic. I love an artist who is able to stand at a mic stand, sing, and command everyone’s attention. It's like I can't breathe because I am captivated. I will be downloading this.

Coaches Say: Blake thinks the performance is a break-out performance and asks Adam “what are you going to do now?” Xtina notes that she’s never sang that song before (thanks for that), but she thinks it would be a difficult song to tackle. I’m not actually sure I hear a compliment here. She then goes on to say that regardless of comparisons, Katrina Parker should own being Katrina Parker. So…Xtina likes the performance? Adam is so proud of her and even says Katrina was not one of the favorites on his team when this began. He calls the performance incredible and flawless.
------------------------------

Cee-Lo performs “Dancin’ in the Streets” with Team Cee-Lo. I’m already giggling because the American Idol finalists sang this as the group number last week. Do we think Cee-Lo already had this song in mind, or do we think he believed he could just do it better? Regardless, it is better. If I could change one thing, I would of course burn Cee-Lo’s wig, but otherwise I am very entertained by the performance.
------------------------------

Team Adam: Mathai (just Mathai)
Song: “I’m Like a Bird,” by Nelly Fertado

The rehearsal package is not giving me the feeling I’m going to enjoy this. However, I’m pleasantly surprised by Mathai’s personality and enthusiasm. The vocals are not awesome, but she’s still different enough to make “pitchy” seem less troublesome…if that makes sense. I like this Mathai performance better than last week’s performance, but given how I feel about the other members of Team Adam, I’m unfortunately not rooting for this kid.

Coaches Say: Blake could have done without all of the background acrobatics, but he likes the performance. Last week Mathai was Xtina’s favorite on Adam’s team, but she says Katrina has taken that spot now (I guess Xtina isn’t interested in hearing Tony or Pip before making that decision). Xtina feels the song had been forced upon her, and it was an unfair thing to do. Adam isn’t close enough to reach over and smack her, but if their chairs were closer, I have to wonder…. But Adam thinks she did great, and her energy is infectious.
-----------------------------------

Team Cee-Lo: James Masone
Song: “Just The Way You Are,” by Billy Joel

Cee-Lo wants James to be a lady killer, and he thinks this is the song that will do it. James sings from a stairwell to a girl we can’t really see in a doorway, but he forgets about her after a few seconds and descends to the stage. After that, zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. Oh. Sorry. Unfortunately for James, I love Billy Joel, but this is just boring me beyond belief. He remembers the girl from the doorway at the end, and we can finally move on to the coaches’ thoughts.

Coaches Say: Blake isn’t sure how he feels about that performance, and Xtina wanted something different. Adam loves it, and Cee-Lo thinks that James’ voice is natural and sweet. He enjoyed the performance.
---------------------------------

Cee-Lo takes the stage again, but this time with Goodie Mob, singing “Fight to Win.” I think they are supposed to be Greek Gods of some sort, and their teeth are especially white and glowy this evening. That’s not distracting at all. I’m kind of indifferent to the song – let’s get back to the quarterfinals.
----------------------------------

Team Adam: Tony Lucca
Song: “Hit Me Baby One More Time,” by Britney Spears

Yesssssssss. For a second I thought maybe he was taking on an Xtina song, but this might be even better. Tony plays the guitar in front of some questionable back up dancers (far more scary than the Catholic school girls from Britney’s video). He’s in love with his performance, and some might think that is off-putting, but I am in love with him, so I don’t care. I’m a huge fan of the performance, and I can’t wait to hear what the coaches have to say about this.

Coaches Say: Xtina wants to get Britney and Justin out on stage to do a real Mickey Mouse Club reunion. While you’re at it, please locate the members of The Party – I miss them. Xtina enjoyed the performance (thank you for finally getting to a critique), and she is glad he put a different twist on the song. Blake is pissed off because that was a really smart move. Adam loves Tony, and he is so proud of him. Me too!
--------------------------------

Team Cee-Lo: Cheesa (just Cheesa)
Song: “I Have Nothing,” by Whitney Houston

I worry about this. There have been a considerable amount of Whitney “tributes” since her recent passing, and I think you get to a point where enough is enough. Parts of her performance are too low, but she really hits and holds some amazing notes. No one is going to be able to sing Whitney better than Whitney, but Cheesa does a good job here. A big voice is needed for this song, and I’m not sure that anyone else remaining in the competition could have tackled this one. Nope - not even Erin.

Coaches Say: Xtina and Cee-Lo give her a standing ovation. Xtina admires Cheesa’s courage and loved every second of the song. Cee-Lo thinks Cheesa looks exceptionally beautiful tonight. He also has a history with Whitney Houston (paging Randy Jackson), and he is ready to invest in grown women vocalists. I’m going to leave that one alone.
--------------------------------------

Team Adam: Pip (just Pip)
Song: “Somewhere Only We Know,” by Keane

Pip plays a revolving piano…..kind of like how Kris Allen played a revolving piano on American Idol Thursday night. Hmph. When he hops off of the bench to approach the audience I realize he is not wearing a bow tie tonight, and that makes me a little sad. He loses me on the falsetto and has a hard time getting back on track after that, but this is still a decent performance.

Coaches Say: Blake asks Pip “Where the hell is the bow tie, man? That’s like me without alcohol!” Seems Blake feels stronger about this than I do. Adam likes the no bow tie, but there were a couple of moments near the end that weren’t perfect. He’s still proud of Pip though.
--------------------------------

Adam now performs with Team Adam, singing “Instant Karma.” They have their own little band going with Tony on guitar, Pip on the keyboard, and Adam on the drums. During the solos Katrina stands out for me the most. I notice that the bow tie has returned to Pip’s ensemble, but I also notice that Adam doesn’t sing at all….that’s okay, he’s doing a really good job looking hot while playing the drums.
-------------------------------

Team Cee-Lo: Juliet Sims
Song: “Cryin,” by Aerosmith

Juliet has raided Cee-Lo’s closet and is wearing black wings on her back. For a second I’m terrified because I think she is the angel of death, and then she gets to the chorus, the lights come on, and I’m relieved to discover she is still human. As she closes the song, white feathers fall from the ceiling as if Edward Cullen just attacked a room full of pillows. All clothing and props aside though, she is ridiculously talented, and I hope she stays around.

Coaches Say: Blake loves the performance because it reminds him of duck season (wabbit season!). I hope Juliet is not a PETA member. Xtina thinks Juliet is fabulous because she goes in and never looks back. Cee-Lo is still trying to catch feathers, but he also thinks she did an amazing job.
---------------------------------

Now it’s up to Adam and Cee-Lo to let go of one person from each of their teams. For me, I’m hoping Adam lets go of Mathai and Cee-Lo lets go of James. Cee-Lo has to choose first, and he reads something heartfelt that he typed into his phone. He then eliminates James. It’s Adam’s turn, and he talks about how he had a different idea going into tonight, but the performances changed his mind, etc. He eliminates Pip, which I’m generally okay with. My nerves couldn’t have handled seeing Katrina or Tony leaving tonight.

Tomorrow one more from each team will be eliminated after America's vote. I'm still keeping my fingers crossed that Tony, Katrina, Juliet and Jamar make it through, but we'll see what happens!

Idol: Another Elimination Shocker

Ryan welcomes us to American Idol and lets us know that the finalists received 53 million votes last night. Kris Allen and LMFAO will perform tonight, thankfully not together, but first we are treated (?) to another Idol group number. The Top 7 take on “Dancing In The Street,” and fortunately they have backup dancers tonight so the cheesy group choreography is not as bad as it has been in the past. Scratch that – a whole bunch of balloon just fell on the stage as the contestants bounced and snapped, so we have a heaping helping of cheese after all.

Results! Joshua and Hollie take center stage. Joshua is safe this week, and Hollie is in the bottom 3. I hope that her praise from the judges last night didn’t give her fans the impression she would probably be safe tonight. I have a bad feeling about this…

Back from commercial, and Taylor Hicks is in the audience! That exclamation point exists only because I had no idea the guy was still alive. What’s he been up to? Not much, but he’s doing Vegas this summer….as what, I’m not sure. Dealer? Waiter? We’ll have to wait and see.

Kris Allen performs his new song “Vision of Love” now from a revolving piano. I assume the piano will stop eventually (doesn’t he get dizzy from that?), and to my relief Kris jumps down with that adorable crooked side smile, and all is well with the world. The song is great, but he’s so darn cute that I tune out the singing a few times during the performance. I hope his second album does well. “The Truth” still makes frequent appearances on my iPod, and he deserves to have a more booming career.

Results! Skylar and Elise take center stage, and Elise looks ready to head over to the stools immediately. Between the two, I would also prefer that Elise head over to the stools of doom….and she does. Skylar is safe!

As we return from commercial, we take a look back on the life of Dick Clark. This is a great tribute to him, and even in the context of American Idol, I am moved by the video clips of his contributions to music and television.

Unfortunately we follow up the Dick Clark tribute with LMFAO singing(?) “Sorry For Party Rocking.” Classy. I’m part of the minority that has no time for them, so I wait for the commercial.

Results! Phillip, Colton and Jessica take center stage, and Colton joins the bottom 3. Ryan asks Randy if America got it right, and Randy lets us know several times that the judges have no power. Duly noted.

However, Elise is safe! Oh man…it’s between Colton and Hollie, and now I’m really nervous. Oh my God! Colton is going home! I feel bad for him because if this had happened last week I think the judges would have used their save on him. He sings his goodbye song from his knees, and he is emotional. Everyone is. Nothing’s real until you let go completely? I wish him the best, and I would definitely buy one of Colton’s albums.

Next week we’ll see if Hollie and Elise can hang in there, if the judges still have no power, and if the contestants choose a wider variety of artists to represent. Until then!

Idol Top 7: Round 2

We open the show acknowledging the passing of the great Dick Clark. Yes, he was a music/television pioneer, but on a simpler level, he was a personality people of all ages recognized as we rang in each new year. I really can't imagine a December 31st without Dick Clark. He will be greatly missed.

The Top 7 perform again tonight for America’s votes after the completely unsurprising judges’ save last week. They will sing two songs each tonight – a number 1 hit from 2000 until now and "a soul song from back in the day"…whatever that means.

Constant: Hollie Cavanagh
Song: “Rolling in the Deep,” by Adele

My palm hits my forehead harder than I had anticipated. Seriously, Idol, The Voice, whoever...stop letting your contestants do Adele. No more! I love Hollie (more than the judges do for sure), but now I worry she will end up with one of those “Adele is Adele” critiques. To her credit she does sound great, and I’m really pulling for her, but the poor kid hasn't been able to do anything right for Huey, Dewey and Louie in weeks, so I cringe at the possibility of what might come next.

Judges’ Remarks: Steven says it was perfect, and this is exactly what J.Lo has been waiting for. What? Really? Don't toy with me, judges. Randy uses the word “pitchy” but says it was very well done. Good for her! Funny that she has to take on a song no one should take on to finally get the praise she deserves. On the flip side, maybe the judges realized that bashing her each week isn't getting her sent home, and they have changed their strategy.
-------------------

Contestant: Colton Dixon
Song: “Bad Romance,” by Lady Gaga

Colton turns “Bad Romance” into a rock song, kind of, and I’m not totally sure how I feel about it. I tend to prefer the originals to most cover songs anyway, but in this situation I would absolutely rather listen to Gaga’s version. Colton’s voice is too low here to give me the energy I want from this song.

Judges’ Remarks: Randy says they are at a Colton Dixon concert. Must be because Colton was performing live on stage and Randy was in the audience. J.Lo thinks it was an exciting performance. Steven sets the tone for the night saying “you gotta get low to get high.”
--------------------

Contestant: Elise Testone
Song: “No One,” by Alicia Keyes

This is a big song for someone who lives in the bottom 3. Elise borrows J.Lo’s wind machine tonight (most likely without J.Lo’s permission), and she sounds pretty good. However, to me, for me, for her, she seems to just be singing really well, hitting notes, and not really connecting to the song. Alicia Keyes feels all of her music, so this is a tough comparison to make.

Judges’ Remarks: Steven had hoped for a better chorus, but he loved it. Randy is happy she stayed with the melody because then people could sing along. Fabulous – let’s just do karaoke from now on.
-------------------

Contestant: Phillip Phillips
Song: “U Got It Bad,” by Usher

Jimmy asks again where Phillip sees himself, and P squared remains humble in his gray shirt. He just wants to make music. Phillip has a lounge vibe about his performance tonight, and it’s very sexy. His angry forehead vein is more passionate now than crazy, and he is really into this song. I love it.

Judges’ Remarks: Standing ovation. Damn straight. J.Lo also thinks the performance was sexy and loves when he shows that side of him. Randy aggravates my angry forehead vein with “Dude, I smile every week because I’ve been doin’ this show for a minute.” He then calls Phillip a real artist as well as da bomb.
----------------------------

Contestant: Jessica Sanchez
Song: “Fallin’,” by Alicia Keyes

More Alicia Keyes? Okay. Jimmy tells Jessica to open up and have some fun with her performance. Judging by the red umbrellas suspended above Jessica’s head, she has to be having a little fun. I know I am. Her performance is pretty fantastic, and I absolutely understand why the judges used their save on her.

Judges’ Remarks: J.Lo loves her vulnerability, and I completely miss Steven's response because I'm trying to pick up that name Randy dropped. “Your talent is so otherworldly I don’t know if you know how great you are and how much greater you could even be. Yo, Alicia, holla at the dawg cuz I know you heard dat!”
------------------------------

Contestant: Skylar Laine
Song: “Born This Way,” by Lady Gaga

So…are we limited in how many artists’ songs can be represented tonight? Two Alicia Keyes songs and two Gaga songs? No matter. I love Lady Gaga, and I love Skylar. I had not heard a country version of this song, but I am so glad Skylar is here to educate me. Her enthusiasm is contagious. Well done, kid.

Judges’ Remarks: J.Lo says she’s a fighter and a boxer (it’s nice to be both). Steven thinks Skylar is giving the other girls in the competition a run for their money. And here we go “Yo, you’re a rockin’ country girl and it was amazing, dude.”
----------------------

Contestant: Joshua Ledet
Song: “I Believe,” by Fantasia (formerly Fantasia Barrino)

Fantasia contacted Idol and Joshua last week to give her support, so fingers crossed he does this song justice. I always think it’s gutsy to take on formal Idol winners’ songs, but to take on their winning song is in a realm of its own. Here’s the thing (we started out friends?) – Joshua is so talented, but I don’t really believe that louder is better. Fantasia had a subtlety about her performances that was wonderful, but Joshua does not display that restraint here.

Judges’ Remarks: Randy hopes America shows up for Joshua tonight. He likes that Joshua was restrained (Restrained? In what world? That's the opposite of what I just said.), and he loves the performance. J.Lo feels blessed that Joshua is in the competition. Steven says Joshua could sing the phone book. Is Steven all out of “beautifuls” now?
------------------

Contestant: Hollie Cavanagh
Song: “Son of a Preacher Man,” by Dusty Springfield

I’m interested to see how this goes since this is a “let loose” song, and that is precisely Hollie’s problem. She has such a great voice though that I could care less how much she grooves. Hollie puts so much of that tiny body into those big notes, and I love this performance too.

Judges’ Remarks: Randy thinks she worked it out. J.Lo says Hollie is showing a new composure. Uh-huh. Steven thinks she has the voice and the vehicle and she should push it a little more. Whoa! Both of Hollie’s songs were critiqued fairly! Thank you, judges.
--------------------

Contestant: Colton Dixon
Song: “September,” by Earth Wind and Fire

There is a large purple tree in the middle of the stage. Just sayin’. Colton brings us back to “piano Colton,” and I definitely prefer this performance to his first one. I don’t think this song stands out (no moment for him), but it was solid.

Judges’ Remarks: Steven tells Colton that at this point in the competition he needs to find a perfect song that fits his voice. J.Lo doesn’t think everything came together in this performance. Randy wishes Colton had chosen something out of his comfort zone and even suggests maybe taking a Lil Wayne song and flipping it….because, you know, Lil Wayne has soul songs from
back in the day.
------------------

Contestant: Elise Testone
Song: “Let’s Get It On,” by Marvin Gaye

Oh no. This is not the song for her. I know it’s hard to bring out “rock Elise” with a soul song, but man do I miss “rock Elise.” Again, hitting notes is one thing, but there has to be a connection. You have to SELL this song, and I’m not buying it.

Judges’ Remarks: J.Lo would like to see more emotion in her performances, and perhaps that is why she is in the bottom 3 each week. Ouch. Steven wants her to find those few songs that America will connect with. The problem for Randy is (fill in the blank) the song isn’t right for her voice. He also references Al Green, but it’s a Marvin Gaye song. So as always, I am wondering
what Randy’s contribution is.
-------------------

Contestant: Phillip Phillips
Song: “In the Midnight Hour,” by Wilson Pickett

Awwww yeah. No guitar for P squared during this song, and he takes the mic off the stand and does what little grooving he is comfortable with at this point. Talk about soul – this might be Phillip’s best night in the competition so far.

Judges’ Remarks: Randy lets us know that Phillip is in the house. Many thanks. And here is the ultimate Randy wisdom for the night: “Exactly what you need is always what you have.” Yup. J.Lo gives Phillip one of those “Mmm!” grunts. Agreed! Steven says Phillip is brilliantly awkward, and that might be Steven's most accurate assessment ever.
----------------

Contestant: Jessica Sanchez
Song: “Try A Little Tenderness,” by Otis Redding

Remember when Tim Robbins sand this song on the bus in Bull Durham? I always go back to that when I hear this song. Anyway, the Idol horns are in full force tonight, as is Jessica’s rasp and volume. I prefer other contestants to her right now, but she’s amazingly talented.

Judges’ Remarks: Steven likes that she is steppin’ out. J.Lo references Jessica’s alter ego, and I honestly didn’t realize she had one. Randy wants her to connect more with the emotion and the lyric. Perhaps Jessica and Elise can go to therapy together to get in touch with their emotions?
------------------

Contestant: Skylar Laine
Song: “Heard It Through The Grapevine,” by Marvin Gaye

Marvin Gaye is now catching up to Alicia Keyes and Lady Gaga. I guess there just aren't that many soul artists or artists from 2000 to today? Skylar gives solid performance here. I don’t know that this song adapts to a country twist as well as “Born This Way” did earlier, but I love this girl’s spirit.

Judges’ Remarks: Randy thinks it was brilliant and every time Skylar is on stage, there is a party. J.Lo thinks she should be really proud. Steven says Skylar is a wild horse that refuses to be tamed, so I assume Steven likes the performance as well.
------------------------

Contestant: Joshua Ledet
Song: “A Change Is Gonna Come,” by Sam Cooke

My opinion doesn’t matter because I know Joshua will receive a standing ovation regardless. However, if there was ever a song to take to church, this is it.

Judges’ Remarks: Weird – standing ovation. Everyone loves it.
--------------

So tomorrow we lose another constant for sure with no remaining save from the judges. I think Elise may be doomed here, but based on tonight ONLY, I’d say Colton might be in danger as well. Tomorrow night we will also be treated LMFAO as well as the return of Kris Allen. He just makes me smile.

The Voice: Team Xtina and Team Blake Face Elimination...Again

Three contestants remain from Team Xtina and Team Blake. America’s votes will save one from each team, and the coaches each get to save a contestant as well. If my mediocre math skills are on point, this means two people will be leaving us this evening. No one in the audience seems to care too much because tonight is also the premiere of Justin Bieber’s new video. Clearly I am in the minority on this one, because I know I will fast forward completely through the premiere. On to the show!

Nope. Not on to the show. The Wanted performs “Chasing The Sun” now, and Blake looks like he needs a beer or twelve. Watching these guys really makes me miss NSYNC and the days when boy bands also participated in the choreography rather than just doing repetitive fist pumps.

Results! Team Xtina is up first and Carson asks the coaches to weigh in on Xtina’s decision to eliminate Jesse last night. Uh-oh. Someone’s trying to pick a fight. Adam won’t judge Xtina’s but had Jesse been on Adam’s team, he would have kept him around. Cee-Lo does not understand the decision either, but he also won’t judge. Xtina is antsy now and wants to defend herself….I mean, talk about the controversy. She believes she stayed true to herself and went with her heart. Well, that was an extreme waste of time. ANYWAY, Chris is safe, leaving Ashley and Lindsey to sing for their lives.

Team Blake takes center stage, and apparently there was no controversy when Blake sent Jordis home last night, because we glance right over that. Jermaine is safe, and Erin and RaeLynn will sing for their lives. Does it matter? Blake loves RaeLynn because she reminds him of a young Miranda, so I don’t think Erin has a chance here.

Ashley sings first, and she chooses Lady Gaga’s “You and I.” Isn’t she in high school? I guess that doesn’t matter? She’s short of breath a few times, and because she’s 17 I’m not sold on this song at all. Adam does not think this was her best song either, but he hopes she stays around. Blake essentially says Ashley is better than Lindsay without hearing Lindsey’s “save me” song. I agree, but can Lindsey hear all of this back stage? That’s not awkward at all.

Lindsey sings “Please Don’t Go” from the audience. She makes her way to the stage going into the chorus. I’m not sure what it is about her, but I’m just not a fan. She just tries too hard to be different…and then bursts into tears at the end of the song. Xtina cries as well, and those better be “too bad I have to eliminate you” tears. Cee-Lo wishes Lindsey luck, and Blake says Lindsey is mysterious, but he thinks Ashley is better. Lindsey fights hard to hold it together.

Just when I think we are about to go to commercial, Justin Bieber arrives and gives us a world premiere…of a clip…of his new video. A clip? I don’t even need to fast forward – it’s over before I can grab the remote.

Results! Xtina cries again because she has a special connection with both Ashley and Lindsey. She goes with her heart and she inexplicably saves Lindsey. Ridiculous. Lindsey will not win this competition.

Erin takes the stage now to sing “Proud Mary.” She has sass and confidence tonight, belting the hell out of this song, and I just adore her. Xtina loves her spirit and energy. And that’s it for Erin.

RaeLynn sing’s The Band Perry’s “If I Die Young,” and she does a pretty decent job, though I think her twang is sometimes forced. Maybe she should sing more ballads if she makes it through. Adam wishes she had picked a different song because she has so much personality.

Results! Maybe since Xtina did the exact opposite of what I thought she would do, Blake will do the same and save Erin. OH MY GOD! HE DOES! Fantastic. Okay, Blake – I won’t fight you anymore.

Next week Team Adam and Team Cee-Lo will go through this process to get us to the semifinals. Until then!

The Voice Quarterfinals: Team Blake and Team Xtina

On tonight’s episode of The Voice, Team Blake and Team Xtina compete again, and the stakes are high. One contestant from each team will be eliminated tonight, and one more will be eliminated tomorrow after tonight’s votes. Carson introduces the coaches, and when he speaks with Blake, he notes that Blake achieved his 11th number 1 single. Blake has actually been tweeting all day today looking for congratulatory tweets (and giving Carson a hard time), so I actually find this exchange pretty funny.

Team Blake Contestant: RaeLynn (just RaeLynn)
Song: “She’s Country,” by Jason Aldean

During RaeLynn’s pre-performance package we learn that she does not have a boyfriend because she’s a heartbreaker. I’m not sure if this will help her get votes or not, but it’s an interesting tidbit, I suppose. I’ll say this for RaeLynn - she has a ton of confidence. The song starts off a bit rough, but then she finds her groove about half way through and sings the song well. I’m still not a huge fan, but I do prefer this to last week’s performance.

Coaches Say: RaeLynn makes Xtina want to sing country music. I would actually love to hear that. She then calls Raelynn “a little badass,” which I’m sure is fine for NBC given that the network let “bonertown” fly last week. Cee-Lo thinks the performance was like AC/DC singing a country song. What if AC/DC and Xtina sang a country song together? Oh, give it a chance! This is Blake’s most proud moment of the season (because country music can kick ass), so there’s really no way she will be part of tonight’s instant elimination.
-------------------------

Team Xtina Contestant: Jesse Campbell
Song: “Halo,” by Beyonce (not to be confused with “Already Gone,” by Kelly Clarkson. Same backing track thanks to a lying Ryan Tedder).

Jesse sings this song coming down a flight of stairs flanked by pictures of his daughter. This is another emotional song for him, and the camera keeps cutting to his kid in the audience to pull at everyone’s (including mine) heartstrings. I think I liked his version of “What A Wonderful World” better than this song, but I enjoyed the staging of this performance, breaking out of the standing behind a mic stand habit.

Coaches Say: Cee-Lo thinks Jesse sang the hell out of that song. My, the coaches have potty mouths tonight. Adam notes that Jesse is a huge favorite for this show. Xtina says Jesse "brought it" on an emotional level and that he did a wonderful job.
---------------------------

Team Blake Contestant: Jordis Unga
Song: “A Little Bit Stronger,” by Sarah Evans

Jordis feels confident this week and hopes to tap into her emotional side for this performance. This worked for her “save me” song last week, so I imagine it will go well for her tonight. It does. She’s growing on me, and I prefer these emotional ballads over the rock image she had been going for previously.

Coaches Say: Xtina likes it when Jordis shows her vulnerable side. Adam thinks she did an amazing job. Blake loves the performance as well, calling it “perfect.”
------------------------

Xtina performs with Team Xtina. Okay. Whoa. Xina enters the stage fairly nude and marches male strippers right by Blake Shelton. I absolutely appreciate the humor in that, but, um what about her team? Oh there they are, and as a surprise to absolutely no one, they sing “Fighter” by…Xtina of course. I’d also like to add that her team is sufficiently clothed. The performance is actually really good, but it sucks for Xtina that she will have to send one of these people home within the hour.
--------------------------

Team Xtina Contestant: Ashley De La Rosa
Song: “Foolish Games,” by Jewel

Ashley wants to make this Jewel song more of a rock song, and I’m excited at that possibility. Ashley begins the song slow, sitting in some fog, but she rises for the chorus as the guitars kick in. The fog almost swallows her but finally goes away…and the guitar goes away too. Hmm. This was not really a rock song, but I did like the arrangement anyway (though I feel teased).

Coaches Say: Adam thinks Ashley is the biggest surprise since he initially didn’t see what Xtina saw in her. I love that Adam is always so honest. Blake says that the best thing that has happened on The Voice is Xtina saving Ashley. Xtina basks in this praise and says Ashley nailed it.
---------------------------------

Maroon 5 and Wiz Khalifa perform “Payphone,” and this is the first time I’ve heard this song. I realllllly like it. Or maybe I just really like watching Adam work the stage. He could sing the phone book?
-------------------------------

Team Blake Contestant: Erin Willet
Song: “Set Fire To The Rain,” by Adele

Whyyyyyyyyyyyyy? No more Adele! (See last week’s post). I'm pulling for Erin, but I am not excited about this. At least Erin is more suited for this song than Naia was for “Turning Tables.” She sounds good, and the way they tried to adjust the band to allow Erin to make the song her own is commendable, but this is still Adele’s song and should stay that way.

Coaches Say: Xtina thinks Erin sang her heart out, but Adele is touchy for her because, you know, Adele is Adele. Cee-Lo thinks Erin did the song justice. Adam gets “very Jewish when the fire comes down,” but he’s glad Erin is okay. Did he expect her to light up like a menorah or something? Adam agrees with Xtina and encourages Erin to work on her phrasing. Blake disagrees with the other coaches saying if anyone in the competition can sing Adele, it’s Erin. Even so – NO MORE ADELE, mmmkay?

----------------------
Team Xtina Contestant: Lindsey Pavao
Song: “Part Of Me,” by Katy Perry

Lindsey wanted to do a Rihanna medley of “S&M” and “We Found Love” while playing acoustic guitar, but then she realized how complicated that would be. My brain hurt just thinking about it. So she switched to Katy Perry instead. The camera gives us an unnecessarily extreme close up on Lindsey when she begins, and I’m not sure that was a great idea given how uncomfortable she looks. I’m not a fan of this performance at all. It just seems too awkward and forced.

Coaches Say: Cee-Lo likes the staging and tells Lindsey she did a great job. Adam hates the word “pitchy” but does mention the moments where the pitch got away from her. Blake downloads her music every time she performs. Oh my. Xtina adores Lindsey and respects her as an artist. She looks forward to seeing Lindsey grow in the competition. Is this long term? Because I wouldn’t mind an instant elimination for her tonight.

-----------------------------

Blake performs “Heartache Tonight” with Team Blake, and the team begins on stage as equals with Blake, which I think is interesting compared to the way Xtina used her team as back up. In fact, all of his contestants have extensive solos, and Blake only sings along. That’s quite a statement.
-------------------------------

Team Blake Contestant: Jermaine Paul
Song: “Against All Odds,” by Phil Collins

This is another one of those songs that has been done to death on singing competition shows, so I’m already uneasy. I appreciate his emotional connection to the lyrics, and I’m glad he puts feeling into the song, because I didn’t think his Bon Jovi performance was all that memorable last week. Nicely done though - Blake has quite the dilemma on his hands now.

Coaches Say: Xtina thinks he is a phenomenal singer and says Jermaine is her favorite on Blake’s team. Cee-Lo notes that Jermaine gave the song soul, which is good because “Phil Collins has a lot of soul for a white guy.” I’d also like to point out that Cee-Lo’s shirt says “Crime Scene” tonight. Let’s not start getting into stereotypes now, buddy. Blake keeps it simple: this was a turning point for Jermaine’s career.
----------------------------------

Team Xtina Contestant: Chris Mann
Song: “Viva La Vida,” by Coldplay

I know Chris is labeled as the opera guy, but I’m very interested to see how he does with a current song. He’s still dressed like he is about to duet with Andrea Bocelli, but he is not performing like a classically trained singer. I meant that in a good way – I really like what I’m hearing.

Coaches Say: Adam is a huge fan of the song but wanted to be moved more because of Chris’ opera background. Xtina suddenly has a fan in her hands, and I’m not sure why. Is it hot in there, or does she just want to remind us that she herself is hot? Xtina gives Chris a lot of credit for taking on something out of his comfort zone and working the stage. I hope she keeps him.
--------------------------------

Out of the two teams, I’m hoping that Xtina eliminates Lindsey and Blake eliminates RaeLynn (just RaeLynn). I have no control over this, but that’s how I feel right now. Xtina is up first, and she makes sure her team knows how much she loves them and rambles on for a while. She then chooses to send Jesse home. WHAT?!?! This was “the dude to beat.” Wow. We’re running out of time now and Blake has to work quickly. He was hoping someone would not do a good job tonight to make his job easy, but that didn’t happen. He eliminates Jordis based on the fact that he’s had to save her already. Ugh.

Tomorrow night one more from each team will be sent home, and here’s hoping I get my way then.

Idol Elimination: Will The Judges Use Their Save?

Welcome to elimination night! The judges only have these next 2 weeks to use their save, so it is highly possible we will see them use it tonight (if anyone but Hollie is the eliminated singer). Tonight we also look forward to former Idol contestants James Durbin and J-Hud performing….but first, our Top 7 perform Pink’s “Raise Your Glass.” For the most part, this is terrible, but watching Phillip stroke Colton’s hair makes me laugh out loud. Wait. Did Joshua fall down on purpose? That did not seem choreographed. Perhaps this is as painful for him as it is for the rest of us.

Results! Hollie and Jessica are called to the center of the stage. Oh right – we’re at that point where the contestants are separated into groups, and the 7th person will have to choose which group they think is safe. This always works out so well each year. So, Hollie goes to one side of the stage and Jessica goes to the other. No thrills and chills there.

James Durbin has a new album and a new song entitled “Higher than Heaven,” and the title alone should spark Steven’s interest. James is sporting new spikey blonde hair, and his drummer is sporting…Colton’s hair style. Awesome. Even though James is really loud, his performance is pretty toned down for him. His “vote for me” antics last year included pyrotechnics and setting fire to a piano.

Results! Elise and Phillip take center stage now, and Phillip joins Hollie, while Elise joins Jessica. Elise looks pretty relieved, but I hope her confidence isn’t premature.

Jennifer Hudson and Ne-Yo perform “Think Like A Man” now, and wow, J-Hud looks good. She is strutting and dancing with attitude and even gives Ne-Yo the old “talk to the hand” motion when he takes the stage. Sassy. I love her confidence, and I’m very happy for her and all of her success. No one mentions that Ne-Yo was a guest mentor on The Voice this season. Odd.

Results! Colton and Joshua are up and Joshua joins Jessica and Elise, sending Colton with Phillip and Hollie. Poor Skylar gets the “go stand with the group you think is safe,” and she’s having none of that. She walks back over to the couches and sits down. Ryan places her with Phillip, Colton and Hollie. Oh snap! Poor Elise looks devastated. Randy is shocked, but the sparkly smiley-face-with-a-tongue-sticking-out button on his jacket is giving me mixed emotions.

We take another commercial break and find out that Joshua is safe, and it’s down to Jessica and Elise. Whoa – Elise is safe! I might as well turn off the TV now though, because I know the judges will save Jessica. And sure enough, I might be a fortune teller because J.Lo and company rush the stage to save Jessica before she can get more than 10 seconds into the song. Randy then calls Jessica “one of the best singers in America ever.” Take it easy, dawg. As I recall, you were also a big fan of Justin Guarini.

So two contestants will go home next week, and the judges no longer have the power to save anyone. I hope Hollie refrains from packing her bags just yet, and that Elise doesn’t break too many things when she gets back to the Idol mansion tonight, because with Jessica getting the lowest number of votes this week, it’s still anybody’s game. Until next week!

Idol: The Top 7 Perform

Tonight we open the show with a glimpse into the home towns of the remaining contestants, including the recently eliminated DeAndre. Well, it’s nice to know he has a support system to go back to. The judges are introduced, and even though J.Lo’s divorce was announced not too long before the show aired today, she doesn’t miss a beat, flashing the same smile and remaining upbeat as the performances begin. The contestants will be performing songs from 2010 to today, with two duets and a trio, and they will also be mentored by Akon.

Contestant: Skylar Laine
Song: “Didn’t You Know How Much I Love You,” by Kelli Pickler

Jimmy and Akon were concerned during rehearsal because this is not a famous song, and that worries me too. I’m not familiar with it at all. But wait! Skylar plays the guitar, and I am SO glad she does. I’m not sure she needs all the fire and flames all over the stage, but she wails on this song as it closes, and I love it.

Judges’ Remarks: I hear a “Yo, yo, dude,” and I think that Randy is about to give one of those mind-numbing critiques we are all used to by now…but instead he starts off our night by commenting on the three kids from Skylar’s home town video package. He then calls her performance “crazy hot. I mean, yo.” Thank goodness J.Lo jumps in now to say Skylar was pitch perfect and nailed it. Steven, however, gives us exactly what we need to make this a great night: “The crows may crow, but the hens deliver the goods.”
--------------------

Contestant: Colton Dixon
Song: “Love The Way You Lie,” Skylar Grey’s version

Colton worries about being compared to Phillip Phillips because he wants to stand on his own as an artist. I’m pretty sure the hair style alone has him on that track. Colton is back to his gloomy staging, and honestly, I can barely see him even when the camera zooms in. He sounds great though, and if this were a blind audition (blasphemy!) I would totally turn my chair around.

Judges’ Remarks: J.Lo says his songs are always very “Colton,” which is what he’s going for. Steven likes Colton’s jacket, and can’t wait for Colton to sing his own music. Randy thinks Colton’s jacket is “crazy fly” and also complements his singing…I think.
--------------------

Duet: Phillip Phillips and Elise Testone sing “Somebody That I Used To Know,” by Gotye. This song is awesome. Phillip is doing much better with this song than I thought he would, since this isn’t necessarily a tune he would have picked for himself. Elise sounds great, and I really love them as duet partners.

Judges’ Remarks: Steven loves the performance and notes that Elise made Phillip blush a little. J.Lo says Elise “sang the mess” out of that song (did Randy pass her a note with that quote?).
--------------------

Contestant: Jessica Sanchez
Song: “Stutter,” by Jazmine Sullivan

Jimmy and Akon do not know this song, and honestly, neither do I. As I listen, I also do not like this song. No offense intended to Jessica or Jasmine Sullivan. Jessica is very talented, and she is singing well, but I wish she had chosen something else. It’s just not for me.

Judges’ Remarks: Randy thinks the performance was superb and of the highest degree. J.Lo thinks– wait, those previous words were from Randy? That was a complete sentence! Anyway, J.Lo thinks it was beautiful because of how Jessica was digging. Steven loves this too, and Randy jumps back in to tell Ryan that Jessica “took down a whale, dude.” And now we’re back…
--------------------

Contestant: Joshua Ledet
Song: “Runaway Baby,” by Bruno Mars

Joshua wants to move away from the ballads this week and let loose. I’m looking forward to this – I’ve enjoyed Joshua’s soulful (yet sometime screamy) voice, I’d love to see what happens with an up tempo song. Whoa! He’s got choreography and everything! He’s yelling at me again, but given the band and backup singers, he kind of has to. I like it though – good for him for branching out.

Judges’ Remarks: Standing ovation. Who didn’t see that coming? Steven says Joshua can sell a song like a work of art, then adds: “because you sing so good.” Oh okay – for a second I thought Joshua was actually peddling songs, but now I know his voice has a lot to do with it. Randy one ups Steven though by complimenting Joshua’s socks before telling Ryan “I really think we’ve got somebody here who has to have it.” He has used this terminology before, and I haven’t the slightest idea what he’s talking about.
--------------------

Duet: Colton Dixon and Skylar Laine take on “Don’t You Wanna Stay,” by Jason Aldean and (ahem) Kelly Clarkson. There’s already going to be a bias here. See, I’m watching this episode several days after the fact because I had the great fortune to meet Kelly Clarkson the other night at one of her concerts, and I was traveling during the Idol episodes. And yes, that was very “Randy” of me to type that, and I don’t care. She’s awesome. And you know what? Skylar and Colton do a pretty good job with this song. Even though their singing styles are so different, they complement each other well.

Judges’ Remarks: Steven says they just made love singing to each other. Awkward. He then goes on to use the words “pretty,” “gorgeous,” and “beautiful.” Man, he is branching out tonight. It was just okay for Randy.
---------------------

Contestant: Hollie Cavanagh
Song: “Perfect,” by Pink

I’m really pulling for Hollie here, partially because I don’t think she gets a fair shake, and partially because I really like the way she says “perfect.” Hollie goes acoustic for this performance, and I like it. When she sings “look, I’m still around,” she beams and so do I. Ballads are really her strong point, and I swear…if I hear the word “pitchy” after this….

Judges’ Remarks: God help me – J.Lo starts off with “you look beautiful tonight, Hollie.” I breathe in and I count to 10. Luckily she tells her that she sang beautifully. Steven says it wasn’t perfect but “you look good tonight, girl.” Really? This is really what we have going? Randy thinks this performance was better than last week.
--------------------

Contestant: Phillip Phillips
Song: “Give A Little More,” by Maroon 5

Jimmy and Akon change the arrangement during P squared’s rehearsal, and Jimmy is concerned about whether Phillip wants to win the competition. P squared has a humble “I want to win but I also just want to play music” attitude, and I guess he is supposed to profess that he’s “gotta have it” so Randy and company will be on board with him. The song starts off with an intimate vibe, and the energy rises as the band comes in mid song. This isn’t my favorite performance of his, but I love how consistent he is with his choices and staying true to himself.

Judges’ Remarks: Steven likes the way Phillip has evolved, and for some reason both Steven and J.Lo seem to think that if Steve McQueen and Johnny Cash had a baby, it would be Phillip. I don’t really have a response for that. J.Lo is also underwhelmed. Randy agrees. Hmph.
--------------------

Trio: Hollie Cavanagh, Joshua Ledet and Jessica Sanchez sing “Stronger,” by Kelly Clarkson. Umm… two Kelly songs tonight? My nerves are shot, American Idol. You know if this had been a duet between Hollie and Jessica I might enjoy it more. Joshua doesn’t fit in here, and he loses the lyrics in his last screechy solo. Jessica starts screaming at me right after that. Sigh. In my opinion, Glee did a much better cover of this song.

Judges’ Remarks: J.Lo is proud of them. Randy thinks including Joshua with Hollie and Jessica is dope. It’s time to move on.
--------------------

Contestant: Elise Testone
Song: “You and I,” by Lady Gaga

GREAT song. Elise wants to play the drums in the beginning of this song, but Jimmy and Akon veto this immediately. She starts on the piano instead, and this is actually a really good rendition. Last year when Haley Reinhart sang this song (well, I might add), she received no praise. I hope the judges are good to her tonight.

Judges’ Remarks: Randy says Elise has mad talent and dope vocals. I’m assuming these are compliments. J.Lo thinks Elise is a closer (like Kyra Sedgwick?). Steven says it was genius. Hopefully Elise can breathe a sigh of relief tonight.
--------------------

As we move into the results show, I worry again for Hollie. Phillip may be in jeopardy too, but really the judges are trying to set up a Joshua/Jessica finale, so it’s going to start getting nasty soon.

The Voice: Team Adam and Team Cee-Lo Face Elimination

And we’re off, with the same math as last week, America has But first, Jessie J performs “Donimo” with team Xtina. Now I’ll be honest – I didn’t know who Jessie J was until Xenia sang the “Price Tag” song on last year’s show. Remember that? She pointed to the left and to the right when it was time for everybody to “look to the left,” and “everybody look to the right.” No? Well, maybe Xenia will have a career anyway.

Results! For Team Adam – Mathai, Tony and Pip are through, leaving Kim, Katrina and Karla sing for their lives. My vote already is to save Katrina. No singing necessary.

For Team Cee-Lo – Juliet, Jamar and James are through, leaving Tony, Cheesa and Erin to sing for their lives. Juliet is safe, so I have no preference here.

Kim Yarbrough sings J-Hud’s “Spotlight,” and I really wish she had picked something like this last night. She sounds so much better with this song and looks way more comfortable.

Karla Davis chooses “I Can’t Make You Love Me,” by Bonnie Raitt. She sings much better than last night as well (maybe she should have stuck to her country roots), but I would pick Kim over her if I had the choice.

Katrina Parker performs No Doubt’s “Don’t Speak,” and man…I really like her. Come on, Adam. Make me happy here. He does! He saves Katrina!

Tony Vincent goes all scary with what must be Marilyn Manson’s version of “Sweet Dreems.” Well…I’ve seen Annie Lennox make those faces too, so I could be wrong. Regardless, Tony could end up bringing the darkness to The Voice every week (it’s not pretty there), so I’m going to be nice to him in order to save my soul.

Cheesa sings “All By Myself,” and just like with Kim Yarbrough, this would have been a much better song for her last night. She may have clinched the save here - this is a really good performance.

Erin Martin chooses “Your Song,” by Elton John, and I’m reminded that I haven’t watched Moulin Rouge! in a long time. I would much rather watch that movie than listen to Erin sing this song again. I know she’s unique, but she’s trying way too hard to be different. Just my opinion.

And Cee-Lo chooses….Cheesa! I’m good with that. Next week the remaining contestants perform in the quarter finals. Until then!

The Voice: Team Adam and Team Cee-Lo Perform

This evening the remaining contestants from Team Blake and Team Xtina have the night off, are we are treated to twelve performances - six from Team Adam and six from Team Cee-Lo. Let's get to it!

Team Adam: Katrina Parker
Song: “Tonight, Tonight” by The Smashing Pumpkins

Katrina tries to work the Adele vibe without singing an Adele song (America thanks you, Katrina). This is an interesting song for her voice, and I’m digging it. The staging makes this performance more Broadway than rock-ish, but since half of the critiques on all singing competition shows are “make it your own,” I’m good with this.

Coaches Say: Xtina’s looks get (dare I say it?) classier and classier each week….for Xtina anyway. She was hoping Katrina would rock out but remains captivated by her voice. Cee-Lo doesn’t think the song needed a “show tune” spin, and Adam immediately disagrees. He compliments her strength and energy.
-----------------------

Team Cee-Lo: Cheesa (Just Cheesa – watch out, RaeLynn).
Song: "Don’t Leave Me This Way" by Thelma Houston

I’m soooooo distracted by Cheesa’s eye make-up, and she’s wearing something almost like a track suit….she must have really taken this whole “Cee-Lo is my role model” thing to the extreme. She sounds fine, but I don’t see any kind of wow factor here.

Coaches Say: Blake thinks it was like watching “Solid Gold.” Adam likes the performance but would also like her to be more distinct and stand out more. Cee-Lo thinks the performance was wonderful and electrifying.
------------------------

Team Adam: Tony Lucca
Song: "In Your Eyes" by Peter Gabriel

So, I was in love with Tony when he was on The Mickey Mouse Club. I may have watched every episode. I may have been an “at home” Club member. I may still have my membership card. Anyway, Tony is really into this song, almost violently touching the crowd’s hands. He stops for a moment near the end of the song, and I’m not sure why. I also don’t care. I love him.

Coaches Say: Xtina remembers his name now, and she finds him to be one-dimensional. She wants him to grow….she says all of these things without making eye contact with Tony. But it gets worse: "Obviously, you have me and your old Mouseketeer buddies behind you, and Justin in particular, but I hope this is about the voice, rather than a celebrity sway." She’s “just being honest.” Oh, Xtina. What you did was low. Adam does not seem pleased with her critique and says Tony did him proud.
------------------------

Team Adam: Kim Yarbough
Song: “Rolling In the Deep” by Adele

I don’t think anyone should sing Adele songs on this show anymore. Or if we HAVE to sing Adele on this show, let the girl who sounds like Adele sing Adele. Kim has a great voice, she really does, but this is not the song for her. I worry that she will fall to the same fate Naia did last week after her attempt at “Turning Tables.”

Coaches Say: Blake thinks she was sharp, but it was good. Cee-Lo thinks she should have picked a different song so no one would compare her to Adele. Weird. Adam notes that there were some problems, but he does not want her to lose confidence. What a great guy (in all seriousness). He closes by saying that he hopes she advances and the right song will be really effective for her.
--------------------------

Team Cee-Lo: James Massone
Song: “Don’t Know Why” by Norah Jones

I’m not sure why Cee-Lo chose this song, and for me, he is all over the place. I can’t really hear him…not in a “Norah Jones has such a soft voice” sort of way…more of a “he’s barely singing and keeps losing the end of words” sort of way. Not enjoyable for me.

Coaches Say: Blake almost threw his panties on the stage. Oh how I wish he had. Xtina notes the pitch problems, but likes the subtle approach. I must be crazy then. Cee-Lo knows the ladies like him, and I guess that’s all that matters.
--------------------------

Team Cee-Lo: Juliet Sims
Song: “Roxanne” by The Police

I am a little unsure of the opening, but within 30 seconds, she goes into classic rock mode, and I LOVE it. This girl knows what she’s doing (so do the lighting folks – lots of red lights in the background), and I really hope she sails through to next week.

Coaches Say: Adam is pissed she is not on his team and calls her performance the best he has seen so far. Xtina says she is dope. Well, actually she says dooooooooope. Cee-Lo is beaming
in a creepy kind of way, saying “wow, baby, just wow.” He also says she is “well-endowed
with too much talent to not have great taste.” Exponentially disturbing.
---------------------------------

Team Adam: Mathai (trending: no last names needed)
Song: “Ordinary People” by John Legend

She’s another one with a unique voice, but I don’t think she’s very connected to the song. She sings about a troubled relationship with a giant grin on her face, and it’s distracting. It was an “eh” performance for me.

Coaches Say: Xtina likes her voice a lot and thinks she makes the right ad-lib choices. Blake admires her confidence and how she is able to have a good time (paging Paula Abdul). Adam calls her magical and couldn’t be happier with her performance.
--------------------------------

Team Cee-Lo: Tony Vincent
Song: “Everybody Wants To Rule The World” by Tears For Fears

Oh my. Tony begins at a very large podium, and I know this is meant as a dramatic staging effect, but all this really reminds me of Eminem’s “White America” music video. I don’t think Tony is going for Eminem here. I keep waiting for the podium part to be over…and whew! The red masked back-up dancers spin the podium around so Tony can make it down a set of stairs. Unfortunately this is my favorite part of the performance.

Coaches Say: Blake was "all wrapped up in whatever that was" and couldn’t focus on the music. Xtina appreciates the production value of the performance but wanted to hear a little more from him. Cee-Lo believes there is an evil empire and Tony is an appreciator of art. And then the meaning of the podium prop is revealed: Cee-Lo would vote for Tony if Tony wanted to rule the world. Thank goodness we cleared that up.
-----------------------------------

Team Adam: Karla Davis
Song: “Airplanes” by B.O.B

Karla is sing on the wing of an airplane in the night’s sky – see what they did there? Unfortunately, Karla struggles with the song and is out of breath most of the time. That's all I really have for her.

Coaches Say: Xtina was surprised by the song voice and thinks Karla whispered a lot of the time. Blake knows immediately that he is going to piss off Adam, saying the song choice didn’t
allow her to really sing. Adam kind of gets the criticism – apparently this is “a hard song to be in the pocket of.” Must be my general lack of music lingo knowledge, but I have no idea what that
means.
----------------------------

Team Cee-Lo: Erin Martin
Song: Walk Like An Egyptian

Oh I really hope she does the look to one side of the room and then to the other side of the room thing from the music video. I’m going to have to wait though, as Erin is entering the stage via chariot drawn by a group of scantily clad men who clearly work out. She sings the song well, though there are no big notes to hit or any other way to really show off her voice. Props to the, um, male props though.

Coaches Say: Blake notices that male strippers were part of this performance, but does not think the song allowed her to sing to her potential. Adam jumps in and says “I think Blake just bought a one way ticket to Bonertown.” Wait – can they say that on NBC? Does NBC just think that’s a real place? Xtina loves theatrics, but thinks Erin could have “brought it harder.” Are we still talking about Bonertown?
---------------------------------

Team Adam: Pip (next week no one will have last names)
Song: “When You Were Young” by The Killers

Regardless of the song, I hope Pip always sticks with the bow tie. No one named Pip should ever wear anything else. Pip puts a lot of energy in this performance, and I think his voice
actually goes really well with this song. I like this guy.

Coaches Say: Xtina loves his vocal ability, but she thinks he tried too hard. Adam still wants him to be more dangerous and scary. Hmmm. Probably need a new wardrobe for him then.
----------------------------------

Team Cee-Lo: Jamar Rogers
Song: “Are You Gonna Go My Way” by Lenny Kravitz

Okay, Jamar wins tonight because his guitar players are women on stilts. He’s also quite the performer – as much as I love the guitar players, I'm not at all distracted by them. He has everyone’s attention. Well done, dude!

Coaches Say: Blake doesn’t understand what the people on stilts have to do with the song. Cee-Lo grins creepily again. Adam says Jamar’s performance proves what this show is about. Amen.
------------------------------------

Tomorrow three from each team advance on votes and one from each team will advance from a coaches’ save. It's hard to say who will say and who will go. As long as the chariot dancers and circus guitarists make it through though, I will be a happy camper.

Idol Elimination: An Almost Save

Ryan welcomes us to elimination night and immediately calls out Joshua, because he’s not feeling well. In fact, he has Joshua describe all of his symptoms, and for what reason I don’t know. Now, Hollie is sitting in front of Joshua already looking like she may vomit, so this could prove to be a very interesting hour of live television.

Before we get to the results though, we are treated to the premiere of J.Lo’s racy new video for “Dance Again.” Um, there are A LOT of almost naked people in this video. For a second, I think I’m listening to “On the Floor,” and then Pitbull pops up in the video to really mess with my mind. I’m snapped back into reality when J.Lo blindfolds her new boyfriend though, because I know that didn’t happen during any of the “la la la la la” parts of “On the Floor.” Well, there are worse ways to kill an hour I suppose.

Results! The duet partners from last night will be called up to learn their fates, and we begin with Joshua and Jessica. Even though Joshua is dizzy, and Ryan reminds us that Joshua isn’t feeling well and may pass out, Joshua takes center stage with Jessica anyway. They are both safe, as expected.

Commercial break, and The Wanted performs “Glad You Came.” I don’t know these guys, but they are apparently a British boy band. The eight girls in the “jump up and down wildly” pit near the stairs know who they are though. Oh okay – they are back upndancers, so it makes more sense to me now that they were in a small hole in the stage floor for a hot minute. J.Lo really seems to like them, and I think one of them kisses her on the cheek as they make their way past the judges’ table. Uh-oh. I hope her boyfriend still has the blindfold on…

Results! Skylar and Colton are up, and after they discuss how Skylar might have been overlooked as a power vocalist up until now, Hollie and DeAndre are asked to take the stage as well. Coincidence? Perhaps. DeAndrea is in the bottom three, Hollie joins him there, and Colton and Skylar are safe. Time for a commercial.

Ryan announces that Kelli Pickler will perform “Where’s Tammy Wynette?” in just a second. Already I’m recalling that Tammy Wynette has been deceased for quite some time now, but I also saw Kelli Pickler’s appearance on Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader, so I imagine no one has told Kelli about Tammy’s passing. Not a bad song though, and she sounds pretty good, but wow – she looks different. I can’t quite put my finger on it, but if Ryan hadn’t announced her, I don’t know that I would have recognized her immediately.

Results! Either Elise of Phillip will join Hollie and DeAndre in the bottom 3. My guess is Elise, since she gets more compliments on her wardrobe than she does on her voice. Yup, Elise makes her way over to the stools of doom. BUT Hollie is safe!!! It takes her a moment to register Ryan’s
words, and we leave DeAndre and Elise hanging on for dear life as we go to commercial.

Before we find out who goes home, Ryan asks the judges if America got it right. Steven says no, and J.Lo and Randy say half and half. Given their remarks to Elise last night, they must think DeAndre should have been safe. Elise, however, is safe instead– DeAndre will have to sing for the
save. I can’t tell what’s going to happen here. The judges have been more supportive of this kid then they have of several of the better performers/singers in this competition. I hope they don’t use their save on him though – he’s not going to win this show. Seems none of the judges wanted to deliver the news…they reek of indecision tonight. J.Lo breaks first, revealing that she wants to save DeAndre, but Steven and Randy do not.

So we are now down to seven, with two more weeks for the judges to use their save. Until next week!

Idol: The Judges Need A Time-Out

Tonight the Top 8 will entertain us with songs from the 80s, and somehow the photo they show of 80s Randy in a polka dot shirt looks a lot like current Randy wearing…a polka dot shirt. He just has less hair now. Our guest mentors this week are Gwen Stefani and Tony Kanal from No Doubt. Personally, I think it would be great if Gwen was also the fashion consultant. There's no word on wheather Gwen and Tony will have any influence on tonight's duets, so I'm already not getting my hopes up for those portions of the evening.

------------

Contestant: DeAndre Brackensick
Song: “I Like It,” by DeBarge

DeAndre walks through the audience to the stage, missing high fives from the audience as he goes, and the non-falsetto and non-hair tossing moments are my favorites. Perhaps if I were still a teenage girl I would be a bigger fan. Still, this may be my favorite performance of his, you know, when he's not whipping his hair back and forth.

Judges' Remarks: J.Lo likes it a lot. See what she did there? Steven is captivated…but I’m not sure how much it takes to really captivate Steven. Randy informs us that El DeBarge was the lead singer of DeBarge. Thanks for that
---------------------

Contestant: Elise Testone
Song: “I Want To Know What Love Is,” by Foreigner

Elise wanted to sing Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” first, and I’m so glad she decided not too – far too many contestants have done that song over the years. I’m slightly distracted by her shirt sleeve, but then she gets to the chorus and I forget about her wardrobe and focus on the inexplicable pocket watches swaying on the screens behind her. Oh the song? Not perfect, but not bad at all.

Judges' Remarks: I have no idea what Steven says other than it wasn’t for him. J.Lo says Elise can sing anything (but she didn’t say the phone book, thank goodness). For Randy, for her, she was underneath the pitch, and she was out of tune everywhere. Everywhere? Meaning the stage, the dressing room? I need a Randy language guide - a dawgtionary perhaps.
--------------------------

DUET: Skylar and Colton sing “Islands In The Stream” by Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton.
There are steams in the background. Just sayin’. Obviously Skylar is much more comfortable with a country tune than Colton is, but Colton seems to be channeling an inner Randy Travis by barely moving his mouth as he sings. I don’t think I’ll be downloading this, but it’s pleasant to listen to overall.

Judges Remarks: Randy says “so yo” then some other stuff, and then tells them they are great. J.Lo says Skylar knows exactly where to bite into a song, and I immediately picture Skylar chewing on her sheet music.
--------------------------------

Contestant: Phillip Phillips
Song: “That Song,” by Genesis

Gwen says that Phillip is sexy, and I wholeheartedly agree. P squared did not look super confident during rehearsal and is not looking super confident as he starts this song, but then that vein on his forehead pops out and all is well with the world. Phillip takes Tony’s advice and stops playing the guitar during the bridge, and his brother-in-law is there on guitar to assist the performance. Interesting. I wonder if any of the other constants feel slighted by this...

Judges' Remarks: Steven loves his individuality, and Randy notes that Phillip and his brother-in-law have probably done this before. They sure did….during the pre-performance tape on the screen. Wow.
----------------------

DUET: Hollie and DeAndre sing “I’m So Excited,” by The Pointer Sisters. Hollie is working some Olivia Newton John leather pants tonight, and she is the better half of this song for sure. Again, pleasant to listen to, but I’m ready for the next solo.

Judges' Remarks: Steven calls it “beautiful.” Weird, huh? J.Lo thinks they are both at home while singing. Randy says they both can really sing. How does one work with that level of critique?
----------------------

Contestant: Joshua Ledet
Song: “If You Don’t Know Me by Now,” by Simply Red

Joshua has a choir from the start, and I think Easter has come early. Joshua even adds a “woo!” here and there as he goes. I keep feeling we've already been here before. He gets a little to screechy for me in the second half of the song, but I can’t deny that he was born to sing. I just don’t enjoy this performance as much as I have enjoyed others.

Judges' Remarks: J.Lo says “ask and ye shall receive” and calls the performance spectacular. Steven said “it wasn’t too much over the top, and it then it was way over the top.” Chew on that for as long as you need to. Randy wanted to stand up from start to finish, but luckily, he did not overexert himself.
--------------------------

Contestant: Jessica Sanchez
Song: “How Will I Know?” by Whitney Houston

I’m overlooking the fact that we already had a Whitney week, because I love this song. Gwen says Jessica’s voice is ridiculous during rehearsal. I am a huge Jessica fan, but given how amazing her performance of “I Will Always Love You” was last month, I’m not sure this was the best idea. I’m also not completely sold on Jessica singing up-tempo tunes.

Judges' Remarks: J.Lo calls her both a little girl and a women, both of which are meant as compliments. Steven says “everything you do is beautiful.” Randy worked with Whitney Houston…and instead of throwing my laptop, I ask my TV buddies to pause the DVR so I can compose myself.
-------------------------

DUET: Phillip and Elise sing “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around,” by Tom Petty and Stevie Nicks
Phillip look s far more comfortable sans guitar than he ever has before, and they both sound great together. Equal measures of angst and rasp, and this is my favorite duet so far.

Judges' Remarks: Randy welcomes Elise back and says they were great. Steven thinks their duet was both beautiful and nice. K.
------------------------

Contestant: Hollie Cavanagh
Song: “What a Feeling,” by Irene Cara

Hollie is a big Gwen fan, and Gwen encourages her to be more energetic with the song. Hollie is still slightly apprehensive in her moves across the stage, but she is showing more personality than she has in any other performance (thanks Gwen). I am so proud of her. Nice job, kid.

Judges' Remarks: Steven calls her pitchy. WHAT? J.Lo says she didn’t let go. She tells Hollie to “forget about everything people say when you get up there”….but she also tells her she has to listen to people when they are trying to help her. Is it “say what you mean and then the exact opposite” day? Randy agrees with them and I’m cursing loudly at this point. I call shenanigans – they’re trying to push her out.
--------------------------

DUET: Jessica and Joshua sing “I Knew You Were Waiting For Me,” by Aretha Franklin and George Michael. Since they are both so strong vocally, they are both also incredibly loud and trying to out sing one another here. I like them both, I do, but this is just too much for me.

Judges' Remarks: Standing ovation, and a lot of “most amazing, best ever” comments, and I’m done with the judges tonight.
-------------------------

Contestant: Colton Dixon
Song: “Time After Time” by Cindy Lauper

Gwen sings with Colton, and I hope for a real duet from them soon. This song and its arrangement are actually perfect for him. Colton gets completely into all of his songs and really playing to the audience. It’s clear that he is trying to build a career here and not just win a competition.

Judges' Remarks: No really, I’m done with them.
--------------------------

Contestant: Skylar Laine
Song: “Wind Beneath My Wings” by Bette Midler

Skylar misses her guns, so the judges better watch out – seems she has quite the collection at home. I’m not sure what to anticipate with this song because of her twang, but I have to say that I love it. Get it, girl. If there ever was a dark horse in this competition, it’s Skylar. And if not, she’ll shoot you.

TAKE THAT JUDGES!
--------------------------------------

Tomorrow we’ll see if Hollie and Elise survive the “pitchy, but you look great” kiss off, and if they do, I have to believe the judges would use their save for just about everyone else. I would honestly rather see DeAndre go home before...well...the rest of the contestants at this point, but I'm not sure I will get my wish.
